The West Virginia Council of Churches and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston invite you to the 36th Annual Ecumenical Scripture Workshop.

This workshop originated as a response of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston to a number of ecumenical overtures from other Christian communions in West Virginia. The workshop is seen as a time for Christians of various denominations to come together to share the study of the word of God, to engage in ecumenical prayer and to build ecumenical community through ecumenical friendships.
Each year we are most fortunate to have with us two eminent biblical scholars, the Rev. Addison Wright (Roman Catholic) and the Rev. Dr. Ben Johnson (Lutheran). Father Wright will present “The Messiah” and Dr. Johnson will present the “New Testament Apocrypha and its Relation to Canon”.
Suggested Readings from Rev. Wright: John J. Collins, The Scepter and the Star: The Messiahs of the Dead Sea Scrolls and Other Ancient Literature (Doubleday, 1995). James D. G. Dunn, Jesus Remembered (Eerdmans, 2003) Part Four.
Suggested Readings from Dr. Johnson: Bart D. Ehrman, Lost Scriptures: Books
That Did Not Make It Into The New Testament, Oxford, 2003. A useful review of
text, translation, and canon is available in Neil R. Lightfoot’s How We
Got the Bible, Baker, 2003.
Worship services will be conducted by various Christian communions. Throughout
the event, there will be discussion periods and time for fellowship. We encourage
you to register today, or no later than June 12, 2006.
Participants
Clergy and laity of all Christian denominations possessing an interest in furthering their Scripture understanding and possessing some Scripture study background are encouraged to attend. The atmosphere of frank and open dialogue among participants and faculty is exceedingly conducive to growth in scriptural appreciationBring Bibles!
