The recount was called for by Kanawha County resident, voter and leader on the no vote side Mia Moran-Cooper, former Executive Director of Problem Gamblers Helpline in West Virginia. Knowing the recount could cost up to $15,000, Ms. Moran Cooper has stepped out on faith and confidence that the many thousands of Kanawha County voters on the no side will support the effort. Three thousand dollars was pledged prior to her filing the papers for the recount.

Thanks to All Who Worked on the Four County Referendums on Table Games Gambling

The West Virginia Council of Churches congratulates the 22,849 voters who took a stand against table games gambling expansion in Kanawha County on August 11, 2007.

In fact we thank all voters who exercised their right to vote on the gambling expansion issue in all four counties – Ohio, Hancock, Jefferson and Kanawha - during the summer of 2007. A special congratulations goes to the campaign in Jefferson county who stopped table games in that county.

While coming so close and losing by 343 votes out of 46,041 ballots cast, we believe voters in Kanawha have gone on record demonstrating their strong opposition to gambling expansion in the state. In four counties that voted, West Virginia’s stood up to the multi-million dollar gambling investors who promote a product that often leads to an injustice against families and children in the state.

The Council of Churches also thanks the many people and partner organizations who worked on the issue. We have developed a coalition that has the capacity to activate citizens in the future on gambling issues before the legislature and the voters.
