February 23, 2007 The Fight Against Table Gambling Continues...
Something very exciting is happening at our state capitol. Your phone calls are being talked about. Delegates are aware of how upset people are with them for passing the table gambling bill. And although the House of Delegates passed the bill to allow a referendum on table gambling in four West Virginian counties, the bill, now on the Senate side, is being handled with more precaution than it was in the House. Information from the WV Council of Churches, who are visiting with legislators every day about this issue, suggests that support for the bill is waning. Senators are hearing about delegates who were swamped with phone calls from “those Methodists” and other church groups.
There has even been a request from delegate to “call off the dogs”. (“Dogs” being Methodists and other groups calling in!)
We need to overwhelm the Senate Finance Committee with phone calls NOW. If your senator is unavailable leave a message. They are listed below. A bulletin insert is attached and will be available on the Council of Churches website (www.wvcc.org with talking points and a list of the Senate Finance Committee. Pastors, please be sure to add your district senator on the bottom of the insert before you run it off. Please use this insert THIS SUNDAY. (The insert was created for the United Methodists but can easily be adapted for your church) The Senate Finance Committee could defeat the bill, or amend it. If it gets amended, it goes back to the House of Delegates. We flooded them with calls before they voted last week, but apparently we flooded them again with calls after the vote to tell them how upset we were! While we lost in Senate Judiciary on Thursday we think it will be different in Finance if church people act quickly. If the Senate Finance Committee approves the bill and it goes to the Senate floor, it would pass. We have a legitimate chance to defeat this bill with the Senate Finance Committee. Call the Key Senators (if they are in your district) on the Finance Committee that have voted our way in the past and thank them for their previous support and ask them to vote no on Senate Bill 369 (The Table Games Bill) - These Senators are - Helmick, Plymale, Prezioso, Unger, Boley, Guills, and Sprouse. Senators whom we hope to win over are Fanning, Love and the new senator, Sypolt. Check the list below to see if any of these senators are in your area. Paying visits to them at the Capitol on Monday would really make a crucial difference. Let me know if you are coming and park at the Council of Churches offices. Now is the time to persevere. “Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary” Galatians 6:9 Thank you for your attention and commitment to this ongoing fight against table gambling.
