Visits the West Virginia Coal Fields Coal Association President Bill Rainey Addresses the Board; Board takes a trip to the Mountain Top Removal Site - Kayford Mountain When it comes to coal, the West Virginia Council of Churches, Public Policy Issues Priorities, calls for a moratorium on the expansion of existing coal slurry impoundments and construction of new ones. It does not specifically address the subject of mountain top removal or other coal issues related to the environment. ![]() WVCC Board of Directors Met as Dawes United Methodist Church After the trip to the West Virginia coal fields the WVCC Board of Directors may decide to re-explore the issue. Meeting at Dawes United Methodist Church, the Coal Association President, Bill Rainey, addressed the board stating the benefits of coal to West Virginia and to our nation’s energy supply. Additionally, he spoke of industry actions to address such problems as global warming and miners’ safety. With the Board of Directors’ trip to Kayford Mountain to follow, Rainey offered justifications for the benefit of extracting coal by the mountain top removal process. ![]() Board members overlook mountain top removal at Kayford Mountain The 20 minute trip from Dawes Church to Kayford Mountain offered the opposite perspective of mountain top removal. Larry Gibson from the Keeper of the Mountains Foundation focused upon mountain top removal as the destruction of the traditional West Virginia farm and homestead. His family heritage has become a mountain peak overlooking barren waste as a couple dozen coal workers could be seen several hundred feet below removing the mountain with gigantic trucks and earth removal equipment. Larry proclaimed, "My family is not against coal mining." He pointed to the entrance to a 1,600 deep shaft mine that is next to his home. "We were in the coal mining business for generations. "We are against the destruction of the mountains and our way of life." |
